I found a small lump in my breast in November 2009 which lead to a mammogram and ultra sound, then ultimately a biopsy. The lumpectomy showed no cancer, however the area around the lump showed intraductal hyperplasia. I’ve been told that this increases my chances of developing breast cancer. After reading info on the internet, I noticed that with a history of even uterine cancer, which my mother had, I have a very high chance of developing cancer. Also I noticed some things going on with my breast that I didn’t notice before. My nipples are scalely and peeling and I have a little pain in my underarm. This is on the side that I had the biopsy. Should I be alarmed or is this just due to the biopsy? Am terribly anxious.
My recommendation would be to speak with your physician to talk about your concerns and to review your pathology report. A diagnosis of intraductal hyperplasia doesn’t automatically increase your risk for breast cancer – there are other factors to be considered. Hopefully your doctor can relieve some of your anxiety.
