Treatment

Once breast cancer is found, staging tests are done. This will help to find out if the cancer has spread and, if so, to what extent. Here you can discuss your treatment, and what you are going through.

  1. Everything I read about treatment for breast cancer leaves out the cost of treatment. My doctor has told me that the procedure that I need would cost about $1200 for the doctor bill alone. That does not include any costs for the operating room, labs, supplies, and so on.

How much does treatment cost? My insurance barely covers half of my costs and I don’t make enough money to pay for my portion. As a result, I have delayed treatment until I have some money saved. My husband lost his job a year ago, so we don’t really have money available for extras like health care. I can’t see having money saved for several more years. Couldn’t the cancer spread by then?

Can you give me a clear idea of how much breast cancer treatments cost? The story in the paper said that just one test cost $4000. My share of that would be almost $2000, and that’s just for the test, not the treatment. I’ve heard that some chemotherapy drugs cost hundreds of dollars a week. Is that true? If so, I won’t be able to afford treatment.

  2. Hey, you probably really need to talk to your physician’s office about this. Lots of times the physicians will work with you on a payment plan I think. My mom’s physician office let’s her pay monthly payments. But you are right, even with insurance any type of medical care is expensive.

  3. If I paid $50 a month for the rest of my life, it would not come close to paying for the treatment. So what do people do?

I’m not able to provide for my family and pay for my medical care on a teacher’s salary. I’m trying to get my daughter into and out of medical school. I’m not going to tell her she can’t finish college because Mom needs surgery.
